Written by Richard Winters
Health Minister Edwina Hart has announced how £500,000 funding is to be shared between a number of Welsh organisations to help them improve cancer care and support under the National Cancer Standards. The National Cancer Standards set out the Welsh Assembly Government’s specific requirements of the NHS and Health Commission Wales (HCW) in assessing current cancer services. This funding has been awarded on the recommendation of the Cancer Services Co-ordinating Group. The funding includes: £158,385 to be shared between Wales’ three cancer networks to be able to respond in areas where the National Cancer Standards are not being reached; £71,476 for the National Leadership and Innovation Agency (NLIAH) to provide laparoscopic training for colorectal surgeons; £255,139 for Informing Healthcare to improve on-screen histopathology reporting and to provide continued statistical support in order to monitor services for improvement; £15,000 to the All Wales Medical Strategy Group to support the Wales Cancer Drugs Group.

Health Minister Edwina Hart said:

“Cancer is one of Wales’ biggest killer diseases. This funding will help a number of organisations in Wales to comply with the National Cancer Services in Wales and will ensure that these organisations are able to offer best clinical practice and guidance in a very important area of work."
